Highline Trail – Canmore

This post has been replaced with a post, Highline Trail Revisited, describing the four ways to access the Highline Trail

The Highline Trail above Canmore was officially opened last Saturday providing hikers with an 8.6 km loop, or 10.3 km of trail if you hike all the way to the east end. Here is a Google Earth view showing the trail. When we hiked to the east end last fall, we had to pick our way through golf course construction to get to where we had left our car.

Many Canmore locals would have not heard of it because it is new.
The main trailhead is at Quarry Lake – which is well-signed, and obvious. If you go to the Quarry Lake trailhead, they have maps showing the trail, its variations, and what is currently open and future construction.
Then once you get on the trail, it’s an obvious trail, and junctions are marked.
They show Quarry Lake on the map above, and it’s very easy to find in Canmore.

Learn to make a point of interest on a Google Map – we couldn’t find this place for the life of us and locals in Canmore had never heard of it…

It would have been much easier if someone could at least point out where the trail-head was on a google map

Unfortunately the Canadian Topo map for Canmore, that I normally use as a base for my maps, has not been updated to show any of the Three Sisters roads so is not much use for showing details of the Highline Trail. I doubt if an accurate map exists at present, though the next update of the town map will hopefully show where the trail connects in to the community. I can’t use this map for copyright reasons.
