There is a New Snowshoe Trail at Kananaskis Village

The new snowshoe trail on the terraces above Kananaskis Village is a welcome addition to the original short loops. It makes a 4.4 km loop and allows for a 6 km snowshoe if combined with the original loops. When we were there before Christmas we walked it as there was very little snow, but its hopefully now snowshoeable, It loops around Terrace and Terrace Link trails, briefly criss-crossing Aspen.

Looking up Kananaskis Valley toward The Wedge.

While mostly through the forest, there are a couple of viewpoints and a few more open areas. The trail heads out from Woody’s Pub parking on the signed snowshoe trail leading to Terrace Trail north. Shortly after getting on Terrace Trail there is a signed trail on the left; part of the original snowshoe loop. If you wish to snowshoe the trail clockwise, follow it. After about 300 m the old trail turns left. Look for a sign in the trees to your left. (The trail may have better signs now as, apart from signs at junctions, the majority of the trail only had flagging)

There are signs like this one at all junctions withh ski trails.

Go straight on the new trail and soon arrive at a viewpoint. Cross and recross Aspen Ski trail through trees and an open downhill to Terrace Link, which is followed to Kovach. Jog left and shortly right (well signed) and make a short loop above the Ribbon Creek Valley emerging on Kovach just before Terrace Trail heads down to Ribbon Creek parking. Turn left and soon after turn left again back onto the snowshoe trail.

Follow the top of the bank shortly before getting back onto Terrace Trail. Currently there is flagging missing at the start of this section.

The trail winds through mature timber, briefly touching Terrace trail before ending back on Terrace Trail near its junction with Terrace Link. This is where you would start if you want to snowshoe the trail clockwise. Follow the wide Terrace trail back to the Village.

The trail this week was fabulous. On Feb 5 the new snow made for magical conditions. Today (feb 7) when my other hiking group went out we did the trail anti-clockwise and found that a snowmobile had run over most of the trail. We tacked on the stretch that goes up to the junction of Aspen and Kovach which had not seen any traffic for a few weeks. So lovely to be snowshoeing in fresh snow!

I really like the section that runs below Terrace trail following a series of low ridges. Should be in optimum condition after the last snowfall.

This is a nice trail! We talked with the fellow who helped put develop the trail in the fall and went out just before Christmas with my hubby and then with my hiking group to check it out. We also found what looks to be a trail that goes off Terrace at the avalanche sign and drops down to the golf course. We ran out of time once we got to the golf course and would like to check it out one of these days.
