Distance 4.0 km one way, height gain 45 m, easy
An easy riverside walk along the east bank of the Kananaskis River with lots of viewpoints and picnic tables. The walk is short enough that returning the same way is feasible. Distance is for whole length of trail.
Start: Hwy. 40 (Kananaskis Trail) 1. Canoe Meadows day-use area. 2. Barrier Lake Information Centre. 3. Widowmaker day-use area opposite Hwy. 68. 4. Barrier Lake Dam parking lot via BarrierLake Rd
Difficulty: Easy. Trail between access 3 & 4 is an unofficial trail along the riverbank.
Note: Currently (May 2018) the trail is closed from Canoe Meadows, at the Green Tongue river feature, upstream to the Kananaskis Visitor Information Centre.
There's plenty to watch on a weekend: novice canoists dumping in the water, kayakers and river surfers playing in the waves, rafters floating by. For competition dates see the web site of the Alberta Whitewater Association.
