Distance 13.6 km return, height gain 870 m, strenuous
From the Trans-Canada, the dark, timbered mass of Wind Ridge doesn't look too interesting. On the other side of the mountain, though, hidden from view, grassy slopes wearing crags like necklaces provide a beautiful route to the summit with one pitch of easy scrambling. Note: Wind Ridge is closed Dec 1 to Jun 15. Closure map
Start: Hwy. 1 (Trans-Canada Hwy.). At Dead Man’s Flats interchange 98 follow signs to Banff Gate Mountain Resort and turn right into Wind Valley trailhead.
Difficulty: Easy trail with creek crossing and one scramble section. It is now possible to avoid the exposed rock step. A trail to the right leads to a messy dirt rake that climbs steeply up through trees to the ridge. Rope or chains would make the route easier!
Note: The new bridge over Pigeon Creek was damaged fall 2017. There is still no bridge at Wind Creek. However new bridges across both creeks are planned for summer 2018. Meantime, plan to wade the creeks. To cross Wind Creek, head across to just before the old Wind Creek crossing and follow a trail left to a crossing place. This comes out right on the trail on the other side of the creek. Map of start
