Distance 10.6 km return, height gain 1381 m, very strenuous
The huge mass of Grotto Mountain towering above the Bow Valley has a route up the sloping west flank that is a laborious ascent to the northwest ridge on a twisting trail, followed by an interesting ridgewalk to the summit. Most people return the same way.
Start: Indian Flats Road, park at a road widening on the left side just before the Alpine Club of Canada urility buildings. See sketch map
Difficulty: Fairly easy technically, but strenuous, with some easy scrambling and no exposure.
Note: Every year, people and their dogs get benighted on this mountain, either by not starting early enough or more usually by attempting a direct descent from the ridge and getting stuck among cliff bands
  • Looking toward the summit.

Please refer to the trail description in the guidebook, especially for unofficial, off-trail hikes.
