ARETHUSA CIRQUE
Distance 5.0 km loop, height gain 274 m, fairly easy
The valley immediately south of the better-known Ptarmigan Cirque is a favourite with connoisseurs of alpine meadows and larches. Why go to overcrowded Larch Valley when you can come here.
Start: Hwy. 40 (Kananaskis Trail). 1.3 km south of Highwood Pass parking lot and just after crossing Arethusa Creek, turn left onto a track that doubles back into a meadow.
Difficulty: Easy hiking on good trail. Crossing Arethusa Creek never gets any easier as it arises from a fast-flowing spring. Try upstream at a narrowing. See sketch map
Note: Trails access #36A Little Arethusa (easy scramble), Mount Arethusa (difficult scramble), and the quick and dirty route over to Burns Creek in the Sheep River drainage. See #36B.
  • Arethusa Cirque 3rd week in September.

Please refer to the trail description in the guidebook, especially for unofficial, off-trail hikes.
