Distance 11.0 km one way, height gain 652 m, moderately strenuous
When I first suggested walking the N–S trending ridge between Hwy. 940 and Plateau Mountain my friends looked at me in disbelief. From the highway it looks to be all forest and as if to emphasize the point, the topo map has most of it covered in a green wash. The reality is something quite different, a splendid ridge of grass and rock, with a few trees spilling over the crest here and there.
Start: 10 km south of Cataract Creek bridge and 1.2 km west of Wilkinson Summit park in a lay-by on the southwest side of the highway. Post flood you may have to search for a suitable parking place.
Difficulty: You need to be a proficient off-trail hiker to do this one. It takes longer than you would think!
Note: Just walking to the top and back is one option. If doing the end to end ridge walk you'll need two vehicles.
Please refer to the trail description in the guidebook, especially for unofficial, off-trail hikes.
