Distance 9.7 km loop, height gain 930 m, strenuous
Perhaps K Country's most popular ridgewalk, the Heart Mountain horseshoe takes in several tops. Do the whole loop or just climb to Heart Mountain and back.
Start: Trans-Canada Hwy. (Hwy. 1). At Lac des Arcs interchange follow signs to Heart Creek parking lot.
Difficulty: You start and finish on good well-marked trails. In between a poor to fair trail follows the ridgeline around. On the ascent to Heart Mountain the trail is marked with red markers and arrows. While there is no exposure anywhere on this route, the ascent and descent ridges are steep and route-finding is necessary on scree and rock. Expect easy scrambling and one unavoidable moderate pitch up a rockband.
Note: It's a little different than it used to be if you're coming in from the official parking lot. You'll go up Heart Creek to the first bridge, cross it then head back down the creek towards the highway to the scramble start.
