Distance 15.6 km return, height gain 868 m, strenuous
This popular outing has a few tricky bits in the valley section, after which it's a straightforward plod up meadows to the high grassy ridge at 344410. Who would think this insignificant summit would be such a fine viewpoint!
Start: Hwy. 40 (Kananaskis Trail) at Evan-Thomas Creek parking lot.
Difficulty: A trail for experienced hikers who are happy dealing with deadfall, bouldery flood damage and some narrow, exposed sections above the creek. Picking your way up this trail and finding easier alternatives can be time-consuming. See notes below.
Note: Users have re-established the trail up badly flood damaged McDougall Creek. It's still a bit rough in places — deadfall to step over and cobble sections. The going is reasonable until you get to the four "steep bank traverses". If you are uncomfortable with these sketchy, exposed traverses, you can avoid the first and third banks by crossing the creek. The trail is gradually improving with more use.
