Exshaw Creek trail closed by Lafarge

The Rocky Mountain Outlook reports that the usual trail up the the west bank under the east ridge of the quarry has been closed for safety reasons at the Knowlerville Bridge. The only route up Exshaw Creek to Mount Fable and beyond is to follow the east bank trail, cutting down to the creek near its north end. See closure detail on map below. For details see our earlier blog “New start up Exshaw Creek, Prospector Trail.”

On talking with Lafarge: The present trail will never be reopened. Their lease extends another kilometre beyond the dam and eventually the whole ridge on the west side of the creek will be quarry. So it was deemed best to close it now and get a new trail going on the east bank. Lafarge is more than happy to help build a new trail if necessary, or improve the existing one.
My contact is a hiker and scrambler himself—has been up Mt. Fable— so knows the disadvantage to using the present east bank trail that climbs so high to reach the bench it trundles along, it has to descend almost the same amount to reach the creek bed between crossings 3 and 4. Not good trail design. It’s quite possible that the end of the trail could be extended on the same contour to meet the present trail at the 6th creek crossing. This would mean just one creek crossing if headed for Fable and no descent. The start from Knowlerville bridge (which is also on lease land) would also have to be looked at.
Building a completely new trail closer to the creek may be difficult because of steep craggy terrain. It needs to be looked at.
But first, the three land owners have to come to some agreement, so it may be some time before a decision is reached.

Anyone notice where the Exshaw Post Office has moved to on Google Maps?

Pretty sure they need to improve the parking if that’s their new location.
