BARIL CREEK TO FORDING RIVER PASS
Distance 13.2 km backpack one way, height gain 829 m, moderately strenuous
The old Indian trail up Baril Creek has been overlaid by a logging road, cutline and exploration road so the going is fast, but not that interesting until you hit the Great Divide Trail.
It's the GDT that takes you through the wonderful country about Fording River Pass that is renowned for the magnificence of its cirques and easy scramble peaks.
Start: Hwy. 940 (Forestry Trunk Road). 3.3 km south of Highwood Junction turn into a parking area on the west side.
Difficulty: To get your money's worth, either camp at James Lake or preferably at the tarn in the pass and spend a few days doing side trips.
  • The pass. Mount Cornwell and its cirque. Photo Cole Warawa.

Please refer to the trail description in the guidebook, especially for unofficial, off-trail hikes.
