Distance 7.8 km return, height gain 810 m,
strenuousA muscle-aching grind up the west slope of Ha Ling Peak, the prominent mountain overlooking Canmore and a fabulous viewpoint. From the saddle between the mountain and Miners Peak, both peaks are accessible.
Start: Goat Creek parking lot just south of Whitmans Gap
Difficulty: Initially a good trail with switchbacks up a steep forested slope. Higher up the new trail has many steps and 3 sets of wooden stairs. Beyond the end of the new trail, the final ascent is on shale and rubble and though hands are not needed, a little routefinding may be required.
Note: Recent measurements by Gerard Lachapelle, Professor of Geomatics at U of C and avid hiker show the height of the summit above sea level to be 2474 m, accuracy 1 m. The elevation gain from the parking lot is 810 m.
