COMMONWEALTH RIDGE
Distance 12.4 km return, height gain 720 m, moderately strenuous
The first main summit of Commonwealth Ridge is a fabulous viewpoint stretching around from Mount Smutts and The Fist, across the end of Spray Lakes to Engadine, The Tower, Galatea and Chester, and then on to mounts Murray, Smith-Dorrian, French, Robertson and Sir Douglas.
Start: Hwy. 742 (Smith-Dorrien/Spray Trail). Turn west onto Mt. Shark Road. In 1 km turn left onto a side road and park a little way in.
Difficulty: A challenging trail involving good routefinding, bushwhacking and easy scrambling up a narrow, sometimes exposed ridge. See blog Track log. gpx
Note: There are two alternative routes onto the ridge: 1. Bushwhack up the NW ridge from Commonwealth Lake trail at the highpoint shortly before the lake. Cairn. 2. A more direct route up the north ridge flagged through the old cutblock from the 4-way junction to the mature timber. Then a narrow trail directly up the ridge to the junction with route 1. If you don't mind some marshy paddling you can use a shortcut from the highway. See map. To get to the slightly higher south top involves a descent followed by more scrambling.
  • The highest peak is Sir Douglas. The second top is on the right.
