Channell Ridge is a long ridge to the east of Wolf Creek. Recent logging along and below the ridge has opened up expansive views to the west that includes Shunga-la-she and mounts Gibraltar, Burns and Bluerock. This is the shortest route to the highpoint of Channell Ridge and doesn't involve crossing the Sheep River.
Difficulty: Mostly easy hiking with the exception of the short hike through a cutblock and a steep pull up onto the ridge. There is no trail once you cross the logging road which is likely to have been rehabilitated in the next couple of years.
See sketch map Note: From the gate head down the logging road (which follows the cutline) for about 430 m. As the logging road bears left, watch for the cutline continuing straight on. Where you go next will depend on whether the logging road has been rehabilitated.
1. If the logging road has been rehabilitated keep following a good trail along the cutline to a creek crossing. Climb the bank beyond the creek bearing left into the large meadow. Keep close to the trees on the left where there are bits of cow trail and cross the rehabilitated logging road.
Head down the left-hand side of the meadow to the obvious entrance to a valley. A good trail, muddy in a few places takes you to the logging road mentioned under "Difficulty" and the climb up onto the ridge. Here is a track log of this option

2. If the logging road has not been rehabilitated, continue on the logging road, bearing right at a logging road junction just after a creek crossing. Cross another creek and arrive in a large meadow. Start #1comes in from the right.
Named after Billy Channell (note the two ells), son of England’s Lord Chief Justice, who lived at the south end of the ridge near the Highwood River and ran a sawmill in Ings Creek in the early 1900s.
