Don’t trust Alltrails trail descriptions

For example one description states that a trail is “great for hiking” and that “Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash”. Local outdoorsman Vern Dewit’s Difficulty Notes for the same peak says “Some routefinding, steep exposed slabs with debris and a 12 foot nearly vertical wall are topped with an exposed ridge traverse. Hiking? Dogs? I remember it as a moderate scramble!

Users “Reviews” while often useful, can also be misleading. Beware of reviews by users who’s ability, or risk tolerance is way above average. There are glowing reviews of Mount Smutts that describe it as a great scramble. In practice it’s a steep, dangerously loose scramble with many locations where if you fall, you will die. Go to Smutwood Peak instead.

Another Alltrails feature is the ability to search for nearby trails or trails in a certain area. Be sure to select your desired activity so you don’t see a bunch of unsuitable trails, then check for details using the Trusted Local Websites and Kananaskis Trailfinder below.

Kananaskis Trailfinder
Trailfinder is an app that helps you select a trail, either in a particular area of K Country, or with specific attribute such as Best Ridge Walks or Trails to Lakes, etc. When you first visit Trailfinder use this link to see all the options on one page. Later you can use the Trailfinder slide-outs on the lefthand side of this site’s Home Page. Example to right. For more information on using Trailfinder see the Kananaskis Trailfinder blog.

My hiking buddies and I called it “FalseTrails” – anybody can post, it seems, and often it seems like the people writing the description weren’t even on the trail they said they were on. I trust your books and Gem Trek maps first of all!

We each have different interpretations; I take my dogs on the trails and if at some point it’s sketchy then I make my own judgement. All dogs are not created equals mine are great mountain climbing
No one should take any app as gospel and same for peoples input! It doesn’t take long to figure the varying inputs
Rather then trash on an app take it for what it is a resource
