Friends of Kananaskis Country has completed a record season of construction, improvements and maintenance of trails. Volunteers worked a total of 2,414 hours during 51 trail days under 19 trained crew leaders. Of note were improvements to the High Rockies Trail, the brushing out of 5 km of new winter trails in the Chester Sawmill area, construction of another work-intensive 700 metres of the new connector trail to Razor’s Edge Trail and improvements to Prairie Creek Trail. Six days were spent on projects in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park.

The folks at West Bragg—the Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association (GBCTA)—have been making incremental improvements to their trail system. A snowshoe/fat bike trail has been constructed along the west leg of Moose Loop to keep snowshoers and bikers off the ski trail, as well as maintenance, repairs and upgrades to the existing trail network.

The Moose Mountain Bike Trail Society (MMBTS) have been busy building a new jump trail at an undisclosed location — it’s still a construction zone — and rebuilding a terrain feature on Jean Guy trail, as well as general trail maintenance.

With the recent budget cuts to government services and the planned reduction in staff we will be relying on volunteer trail groups to maintain trails on Parks and Public Lands. Hopefully we will be able to avoid the complete lack of maintenance after the Klein era cuts.
