Looking for a Curry on the Way Home ?

We stopped at the Mehtab in Cochrane on our way home last night for some of the best East Indian food in the Calgary area. The attractive large dining room belies the strip-mall exterior. The friendly waiter offered us a choice of table and took our order for a beer, fruit juice and veg samosas right away. The samosas were freshly cooked and came with tamarind, mint relish and salad veggies.  The food here is delicious and includes several dishes not offered by Calgary restaurants. One of our favorites is Chicken Kalimirch, a creamy dish of chicken simmered in cashew paste and wine with black peppers. Providing warm plates for the main course is an example of their attention to detail.

They have an extensive menu with the usual Appetizers, Tandoori Specialties, Veg and Non Veg Dishes and a good selection of bread. I’m not sure what part of India these folks are from; they seem to use cashew paste and black pepper in many of their recipes, but not yogurt or coconut milk. Prices are about the same as you would pay for the equivalent food in Calgary.

The Mehtab is located in a section of strip mall along 5th Ave W in Cochrane, at the back of the parking area behind Blockbusters and Starbucks. If you want to order take-out, their phone number is 403-851-0100. Open 7 days, 4:30 – 9:00.
